PHILOSOPHICAL AND AESTHETICAL EXTENSIONS ON THE “NEW SENSITIVITY” MOVEMENT: THE BEAT GENERATION AND THE NEW LEFT UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ONE-DIMENSIONAL MAN.

In this paper, I analyze the contribution of One-dimensional Man of Herbert Marcuse on the aesthetical and political movement of decade of 1960, with main references to the Beat Generation and the New Left in America. On the one hand, I refer to the cultural change through “beat” literature and on the other hand, to the social action of SDS (Students for a Democratic Society). The emphasis is given on the cultural critique, the political tensions and the social conditions which lead to the formation of the New Left Movement and its confrontation on significant political issues, such as the struggle for civil rights and against the racism. According to Marcuse, the dominance of technology on aesthetical qualities consists in a proof that the Capitalism is deep-rooted in the mental and social reality. The decade of ’60 and the multiformity of these movements are based on this mental and social change, related to the emancipation of imagination. This tension will open up a new road through a conjunction of Reason, Imagination and Sensitivity.
